Jim Block
In 1973, Jim Block was the first fast-food burger restaurant in Hamburg – the Hamburg original. Since then, many more locations have been added and the company has enjoyed a successful 50-year history – with strong values and a clear attitude.

Studio Istland designed the first branch on Hamburg’s Dammtorstrasse. At the heart of the design concept is the origin of the Hamburg original, which is reflected in design elements such as the container wall, the industrial style of the port or the warehouse flair exuded by old industrial lamps from the port of Hamburg with wooden and metal surfaces.

Contemporary interior design (based on Studio Oeding‘s corporate design) also includes a considered approach and use of budget and resources. All existing furniture was incorporated into the interior concept and intelligently upcycled and upholstered with new hard-wearing fabrics and genuine leather.

The storytelling in the space conveys the company’s attitude in the form of quotes that are used decoratively and answer questions about where the food comes from, who the founding Block family is, their commitment to quality and the values they live by.

The entire space is bathed in warm gray and becomes an inviting place with an accentuated lighting concept and many plants. The renovation was carried out in various stages as open-heart surgery and is the beginning of a series of redesigns.

The next store will also incorporate an element developed specifically for Jim Block. The original Hamburg Jim Block tile is based on the Delft tiles, the Hamburg version of which can still be found in many kitchens in Hamburg’s Wilhelminian style houses today.
